A programme to help schools and communities protect pollinating insects has been awarded £1.4 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The Polli:Nation project is being developed by Learning through Landscapes in partnership with leading nature organisations including OPAL.
The activity of pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies has been valued at £430 million to UK agriculture each year, but these insects are in severe decline.
Polli:Nation will engage pupils, teachers and volunteers in 260 schools across the UK to survey their school grounds and local community spaces, transform them into pollinator-friendly habitats and learn about these insects.
Juno Hollyhock, Executive Director of Learning through Landscapes, said she was delighted that the project had received HLF funding, adding: "Schools are at the heart of our communities and we hope through the Polli:Nation survey that children and adults alike will be inspired to make the changes needed to help our pollinating insects.”
David Slawson, Director of OPAL, said: “Pollinating insects are a vital part of our environment, but many people are unaware of their importance. OPAL is delighted to be part of the Polli:Nation project to help the next generation learn about the role of these insects and how to help safeguard their future.
“We look forward to using our expertise in developing user-friendly nature surveys and our network of partners across the UK to introduce this important topic into schools nationwide.”
